Τhe MSc «International Medicine-Health Crisis Management», Athens University School of Medicine cordially invites you to a two-day advanced course on Migrants health. This high level training course is addressed to health professionals associated with the health care of migrants and refugees, detainees, marginal communities and the ethnic minorities.
Attendance is open to Medical doctors, nurses and midwifes and to other health professionals. Scientists with specific interest in Migrants´ issues can also attend following evaluation of their work experience (health economics, international relationships, social workers, psychologists, medical anthropology, law etc).
The course is taught exclusively in English.
The course curriculum:
• Population movements in a global socio-economic context
• International legislation and humanitarian law
• EU legislation and policies
• The Greek case/concerning the case of Greece
• Legal, cultural and social issues in host countries: access to health services
• Epidemiological profile
• Health priorities: HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, Mother & Child Health, Mental Health
Duration & Venue :
• 1st Day: January 14th 2012 16.00-20.00Hrs
• 2nd Day: January 15th 2012 09.00-17.00Hrs
The courses will be held at the EKEPI CONFERENCE HAL, 39 KIFISIAS Street Marousi Athens.
Objectives:
Participants at the end of the course should be able to:
• Define the causal relations and the dynamics of migration of populations on the move on a global and local scale
• Understand and apply the principles of International Law and EE regulations for refugees and migrant populations in Greece
• Approach and communicate the principles of cultural mediation and sensitivity in the context of their clinical practice
• Identify the basic epidemiological and socio-cultural characteristics of the main ethnic groups present in Greece
• Set the main priorities for public health targets affecting the health of populations on the move within the
Greek context
• Describe and critically appraise the “Best Practices” for the health of populations on the move according to Greek and International literature and their applicability in the local context

Faculty:
The course is taught by a dynamic multidisciplinary team including:
• Academics
• Clinicians & Front-line field workers
• NGOs (MSF, PRAKSIS, MDM)
• Representatives of International Organizations (UNHCR, IOM, GCR)
Course Fee:
• Corporate and NGO members: 200 Euro
• Individual participations: 100 Euro
• Graduate students of health sciences: free (upon availability on a first come /first served basis.
Fees are payable to the Athens University School of Medicine Special research Grant
Course participants will:
• Receive manuals and hand –outs
• Benefit tailored “hands-on’’ training for a limited number of participants
• Be awarded a training certificate following an evaluation process at the end of the course
